The 4 th century Greek soldier, writer and historian who wrote the first equestrian, “The Art of Horsemanship.” Many of his principles are still applied today.

X-ray

A diagnostic tool that uses high-frequency, short-wave electromagnetic rays that penetrate a solid mass to get a picture of what is going on inside.

Yearling

A foal of either sex that is between one and two years old.

Yellow dun

A coat color of any shade of yellow with brown points rather than the black points that a typical dun has.

Zebra

An African mammal related to the horse. Despite it’s very different coloring and size, zebras share many common social traits with the horse in terms of how a herd is organized, interaction of mother and foal, etc.

Zebra stripes

A primitive marking consisting of black stripes wrapping front to back from the hock and knee on down. Also called tiger stripes, seen most commonly on duns.

Zigzag

A cross-country jumping obstacle made of logs placed in a zig zag pattern to form a series of alternating “v” shapes. Also a dressage move consisting of angled changes of direction from one lead to the other.
