Horse Transportation Laws

Just as with any vehicle on the road, vehicles hauling horse trailers must follow general road and safety rules. Things to keep in mind:

  • Horse trailers must be registered; some states require special permits and licenses according to trailer size and weight or may require side- and rear-view mirrors for added safety
  • The weight of the trailer must be visible on decals visible from both sides of the trailer
  • The trailer must have a braking system
  • Side- and rear-view mirrors must provide good visibility
  • The trailer must have a working electrical system for brakes, hazard lights and turn indicators
  • Always maintain safe speeds while pulling a horse trailer, and take care when turning or when driving in high winds
  • Abide by all road rules and follow safety precautions
  • The vehicle towing the horse trailer show have adequate towing capacity
All road rules are important and should be followed for the safety of your horse(s) and all motorists. Always take extra care, be aware and be courteous on the road.
