Barb Horses

14.2hh - 15.2 hh

Colors: Grey, bay, black or brown

The Barb is commonly recognized as the second oldest breed of horse after the Arabian. There is even one school of thought that suggests they are older and can trace their roots back to a herd of horses that survived the Ice Age. Native to North Africa, this desert horse shares very little in appearance with it's better known neighbor, the Arabian. Courser and thicker than the Arab, the Barb shares its stamina, agility, soundness and impressive speed over short distances.

The Barb's influence over the development of equine breeds around the world is significant. It played a major role in the development of the Andalusian, the Thoroughbred, the Connemara, and the American Mustang. Impressive warhorses because of their endurance and ability to survive on meager rations in a harsh climate, the Barb failed to gain the modern appeal of the more refined Arabian. It doesn't help that they are reputed to have a somewhat unstable temper. Today they are still used by Algerian ranchers. Enthusiasts ride them in North African festivals dressed in colorful native attire.
