The Anglo-Arab breed refers to any horse that is a combination of Arabian and Thoroughbred. Originating in England in the 18th and 19th centuries, the best of the breed have between 25 to 45 percent Arabian blood but most closely resemble a Thoroughbred. Ideally, they will combine the endurance of an Arabian with the speed and scope of a Thoroughbred. They first became popular in France as a military mount and eventually were influential in the development of the Selle Francais breed. They are also the forefathers of the Australian Stockhorse.
The modern Anglo-Arab is an intelligent, enormously versatile horse with an excellent temperament, proven to be successful in Olympic level competition as well as a family owned pleasure horse. Though not as fast as a Thoroughbred, they are far more powerful as jumpers. Elegant gaits and striking self-carriage also make them exceptional dressage horses. Their stamina, courage and inherent soundness make them an outstanding choice for hunters, jumpers, and cross-country.
